After much deliberation, I decided to convert my bicycle. The first rides were fantastic. The motors start smoothly when I pedal, so you can hardly feel how well they're working. There are many of them on the hills and in Wuppertal, and they provide excellent support. I'm thrilled.

In the fall of 2020, I had the VELOSPEEDER drive (the smaller version with 40 Nm) retrofitted to my mountain bike with a Rohloff hub gear. Even with the large battery, the bike remains around 19 kg, ideal if you still want to ride a "regular" bike occasionally! I admit, if it had been structurally possible on the bike, I would have preferred the slightly more powerful motors for my Eifel region. But for somewhat sporty riders, even the smaller motor version is very helpful on moderate climbs. What really motivated me to finally write a review is the fantastic service from VELOGICAL. I had – probably through my own fault, as it later turned out – damaged the controller twice (by using a Li-Po, not a Li-Ion battery). Mr. Frieden, co-founder and technical director... The developer of the VELOSPEEDER took a lot of time and generously helped me (including providing a replacement controller with meticulous setup and other assistance). He even gave me tips on how I could continue using my (third-party) LiPo battery safely. I admit, I've rarely experienced such helpful customer service! So, all in all, a well-deserved 5 stars in my opinion for the product and the team at VELOGICAL!

As a frequent rider and touring cyclist, I'm a fan of good, sustainable solutions for my bike. I've been riding Rohloff, Son, Reset Racing, and B.O.R. for years – all companies whose price is reflected in their service. Based on an apparently very strong conviction in the quality of their own product, our service conversation was customer-unfriendly and not at all conflict-resolving, but rather quite obviously arrogant and insulting. The customer service's main argument is that they've never heard of my problem, so the fault clearly lies with me because I obviously hadn't installed the dynamo correctly (no questions asked if I could send a photo of the setup or if the dynamo was doing other strange things). As a gesture of goodwill, they sent me ten rubber rings (without which the dynamo wouldn't work), and the "cents" discussed on the phone turned into thirteen euros. When I asked, I was insulted, and one email ended with: […] Please allow me to make an internal note in our customer folder when we receive such customer reactions […]. In between, it said: […] Your account of our telephone conversation contains several misunderstandings, even distortions. Fortunately, we are not yet accustomed to such representations from customers […]. I have nothing further to add. For a good price, which I am paying out of good faith for a niche product, I want friendly advice over the phone and a practical, helpful solution, even in the event of a possible misperception on my part. A brief search of other online customer reviews of Velogical already vaguely underlines that my review here in no way addresses a problem that I am imagining, as the manufacturer claims in its reply. –– as a frequent cyclist and touring cyclist, I am a fan of good, sustainable solutions for bikes and have been riding Rohloff, son, reset racing and b.o.r for years – all companies where the price is also reflected in the service. grounded in a very strong conviction of the quality of velogicals own product everything in our service conversation was shockingly turned away from my needs as customer and not at all oriented towards solving conflicts, but rather obviously arrogant and insulting.

Owner's response

The customer called us and discussed a usage phenomenon that was unknown to us in connection with the correct use of our product. We went through all the essential installation points on the phone, including in the presence of our two engineers. After this discussion, we had no further questions on the matter. The customer then claimed that he had not received all the necessary supplies, which is not true. Presumably, he had "misplaced" his accessories. The customer then ordered inexpensive, quickly delivered accessories (cents plus shipping add up to small amounts in euros), which he received promptly, and did not pay the costs (a cost-covering service), intertwined with multiple coded mixed messages. The above text reads similarly distorted, with a corresponding sense of mission, including extensively fictionalized text corrections. The quoted passages from October 15, 2020, are/were (taken individually) correct to this extent and, in our view, justified. Fortunately, even after years, there are very few such incidents, although they are published in great detail.

My son (who has Down syndrome) has been using the electric assist on his recumbent bike for a year now. He absolutely loves it. All he wants to do is ride. Unfortunately, on our last ride (after 15 km) two days ago, we had a power outage due to a faulty magnetic sensor. One phone call, and we got an appointment immediately. I drove there and was able to pick up the bike again two hours later. Excellent service, very nice person. Highly recommended... Daniel is looking forward to his next ride on the dike in Ditzum. Wishing you continued success. Best regards, Gudrun

Owner's response

Thank you for the good news, we are delighted to read it! We wish you many more enjoyable journeys of discovery!

I've had the Velospeeder on my Pino tandem for a year now and I'm completely satisfied. I was just there today because of a problem with the pedal sensor, which was fixed quickly, reliably, and free of charge. Great product, great service!

Owner's response

Thanks for the feedback! Tandems, especially Pinos, regularly visit us.

I've been using an AC dynamo on my bikes for a long time. So far, I've only replaced the O-rings on the rim contact due to wear and tear; otherwise, they've been in perfect working order (only in freezing temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius or colder does the O-ring slip on the rim). In the past, I've had one or two of the better dynamos from other manufacturers break per year (long distances of around 5,000-8,000 km per year at higher speeds), and I didn't want a hub dynamo because of the pedal resistance. My relationship with the company has always been good for years. I can't report anything negative.

Owner's response

Thank you for this positive long-term feedback. Jessie has been one of our first customers since summer 2012 and received one of our first 10 prototypes three-quarters of a year before our rim dynamos were even launched. Since then, she has been using a rim dynamo on her fully faired recumbent bike/velomobile, even at top speeds in hilly terrain. Previously, she used sidewall dynamos from other manufacturers that ran on the tire.

For over a year now, the Velospeeder has been working reliably in all weather conditions. On my cycling trips with a tent and all my gear, it gets me up the mountains and makes off-road riding much easier, as my bike, especially with around 20 kg of luggage, handles sand, mud, and gravel much better. It's also a real boon for my relationship, because now I can cruise up the mountain and wait relaxed for my boyfriend at the top, instead of panting my way up and then immediately continuing on my way because he's been waiting for me for ages! I particularly appreciate the option of riding without the motor, as it significantly increases the range and keeps cycling a sporty activity. Furthermore, the bike isn't immediately recognizable as an e-bike to thieves and is therefore less appealing. I can't imagine cycling without my Velospeeder anymore!

Owner's response

Thank you for the vivid feedback on the cycling trip with the Velosspeeder and for the insight into the "social benefit" of experiencing beautiful cycling moments together!

I've been using the motor in my daily life for just over a year now. I don't drive a car and do everything by bike—even for larger shopping trips, which I put in a bike trailer, the motor is always reliable. The Velogical team is open and helpful. They respond quickly and reliably to inquiries and problems. In case of urgent issues, I receive prompt assistance from their workshop. Thank you!

Owner's response

Thank you! Customer Jean-Pierre Weiser and his girlfriend, who also use the Velospeeder for everyday transportation, belong to our youngest age group. They have already embraced the transportation revolution in their private lives, bridging the gap between the city and the surrounding countryside. Team Velogical wishes them many more trouble-free kilometers on their daily commute.

After extensive research, I opted for the Velospeeder drive system in 2014 as a retrofit solution for my city bike (a well-equipped steel bike, weighing approximately 20 kg without the motor). Despite initial skepticism regarding the drive principle, I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency and performance of the two motors after only a short time riding. Certainly, this drive system cannot be directly compared to the familiar mid-drive or hub motors. In my case, it perfectly met my requirements: minimal retrofitting effort, hardly any changes to the bike's overall appearance, low weight, and therefore minimal impact on the already considerable overall weight. I still ride the bike with the Velospeeder today, in all weather conditions. In the rain, the "slippage" of the drive system that I had anticipated did occur. Switching to the higher contact pressure quickly resolved this issue. I have not yet observed any increased rim wear from using the drive system. In our area (the city of Zurich and surroundings), we have some hills that I wouldn't be able to manage so easily without motor assistance. Many thanks to the development team so far, and I wish you continued success with your innovative ideas. Christian NB: I'm happy to give four stars instead of the full five, as I always see room for improvement. For example, I'd like to see a more attractive website design.

Owner's response

We still vividly remember our initial detailed email exchanges and the comprehensive discussions about our Velospeeder drive concept. We are delighted with the long-standing relationship and that the early "risk investment" in one of our first commercially available prototypes led us to patiently persevere through all subsequent development stages, even when some applications didn't initially work as desired. The continuous, constructive, and patient feedback helped us achieve the level of functionality we have today, especially in the mountainous terrain of Switzerland.

For about a year now, I've been riding reliably with this wonderfully lightweight motor, and my bike takes me wherever I want to go in no time. Velogical, thank you so much, you guys are simply amazing! And the best part is, the motor can also be attached to a different/new bike. 👍👏

Owner's response

Thank you for the lovely feedback and for your trust in investing in a new Velospeeder bicycle. Of course, we're also delighted that our technology provides the desired riding experience, even far from Cologne and on Lake Constance. :-)
