A completely honest and straightforward approach to this craft, without any frills or inflated, profit-driven advice. A small-time lone wolf with a great passion for all classic bicycles. My bike is happy to come and adapt to the specific conditions on site.

Excellent service and I'm very satisfied. My high-quality racing bike was properly repaired and adjusted here in the workshop. I can recommend this workshop without hesitation and will definitely come back if I have any further problems.

Anyone who appreciates honest and competent work will find exactly what they're looking for at Malpaso Bikes. There's no reason not to have your bicycle repaired or serviced here. One of the last shops in the world that still offers genuine craftsmanship.

Years ago, I had my bike repaired there and was repeatedly annoyed that I paid far too much for the spare parts. The repair itself was also much too expensive. Now I'm getting the same service for less than half the price I paid back then. Furthermore, they're difficult to reach and the owner is not only unfriendly but downright rude.

Owner's response

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry you found me rude and unfriendly. That wasn't my intention. To ensure that no one is upset about my high prices in the future, I kindly ask all customers to compare prices before placing an order.

The owner is very experienced and takes plenty of time to provide honest advice. At no point did I feel like he was just trying to make a quick sale, as I've experienced with other requests. I really enjoy coming here.

Fantastic bike shop, offering excellent advice on repairs and modifications that aren't aimed at selling expensive parts. The advice is very customer-specific; customers who need their bikes for commuting receive different guidance than touring cyclists, downhillers, etc. The quality and speed of the work are also superb. They still work the old school way here... It's a place you'd gladly take your prized possessions.

Absolutely fantastic! Fast and professional repair, super friendly and accommodating :) Would definitely use again! Broken rear wheel replaced within a day and even repaired the dynamo and bell at no extra cost! Absolutely fantastic!

Owner's response

Thank you for your kind review. I'm glad someone is satisfied with my work. Like everyone else, I generally have to charge for my services. Only occasionally can I offer small jobs, such as installing a doorbell, free of charge as a bonus.

Good technical knowledge, but aggressive sales tactics. I paid €23.90 for the Shimano HG53 chain. The recommended retail price for the HG53 is listed as €16.95. Anyone entering this shop should check prices elsewhere before buying or commissioning anything! I can't remember ever being ripped off like this. He even tried to sell me a chain lock, even though I told him I repair my own bikes and have the necessary tools. When I asked if a chain rivet pin was included, he took the chain lock off the shelf instead of answering my question. When I asked how much a chain and chain replacement would cost, I didn't get an answer either. Luckily, I was able to return the chain lock after opening the packaging on the way home and finding the separate rivet pin. Chain replacements are easily done with it. The whole experience bordered on fraud. My conclusion here, too, is that healthy skepticism is more than necessary!

Owner's response

It's a shame you perceived my offer and advice as deceptive. A manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is a non-binding price recommendation. Sometimes, unfortunately, I have to calculate things differently to make the sale profitable. My goods and their prices are an offer. No one is forced to buy anything.

During our conversation, I understood that a chain lock was desired to make the chain easier to install at home.

Please always check prices and offers beforehand to avoid disappointment on both sides. It's also unpleasant for me when my customers are dissatisfied afterward.

The expectation of getting a custom-built, high-end bike by working with a specialist who has his own workshop, rather than a "wholesale retailer," was unfortunately disappointed, even though the website suggests this individualized approach. The "sales consultation" was limited to handing over the (admittedly current) catalog of a very well-known and dominant brand manufacturer, whose portfolio doesn't seem to cater to individual needs. They suggested I take a look around and order online. Well, what a shame. So, no sales pitch, even if the wording was politely dismissive – apparently just a workshop, which I can't comment on since I didn't use their services.

Owner's response

Dear Ms. Krebs,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that the information on my website under the "Workshop" section was misunderstood by you.

From my perspective, it clearly states that I offer professional bicycle frame work, such as facing the head tube.

Unfortunately, I was extremely busy on the day of your visit. On another day, I would have gladly taken more time for you and at least given you more recommendations for your bicycle purchase.

If you ever decide to use my workshop services, I'm sure you and your bicycle will be satisfied with my work.

Sincerely,
Martin Hartwig

I bought my bike here in 2011 after comparing prices at several other shops. The advice was good, detailed, and personalized. My wishes were taken into account as much as possible (within my budget). The staff are both professional, friendly, and patient. The price-performance ratio of the bike I purchased was excellent, and upon request, the salesperson was even willing to offer me a discount on the additional purchase of a lock, Pidlock system, and lights. The inspections and maintenance work performed were always satisfactory and, even during the season, completed relatively quickly. The price range for these jobs is reasonable. Despite the numerous kilometers – the bike was used continuously in the summer as a means of commuting between home and work (30 km per day) and for leisure rides between 50 and 200 km – I still enjoy my bike in 2016 (after 5 years!)! Even though I now tinker and tinker with my bike myself, I would always have it serviced or checked at Malpaso if in doubt. ``` Many thanks to the ambitious employees!
